White Linen Night!

New Orleans has always been hot in the summer. In the days prior to the delightful invention of whole-house air conditioning, like we have at 1896 O’Malley House, ladies wore white dresses and gentlemen donned white linen suits to escape some of the summer doldrums.

White Linen Night is a celebration of those bygone days, when modern-day ladies and gentlemen stroll the Warehouse Art District on the first Saturday night in August in their white linen. Occasionally you will even glimpse stylish white hats.

This year, as sponsored by Whitney Bank, White Linen Night will take place on Saturday, August 7, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. Julia Street will be blocked off for four blocks for so that the strollers can visit approximately 20 different art galleries. The Contemporary Arts Center . will host a White Linen Night party as well, with an art show and live music.

Complimentary hand-held fans will be available at each gallery and at booths along Julia Street . Sample New Orleans’ cuisine from local eateries and sip on cool drinks as you stroll from gallery to gallery. Enjoy the music flowing from the outdoor stages from several local musicians.

For only $10 (free for CAC members), the official after party at the Contemporary Arts Center is a must-do! You will hear great music, enjoy real art and mingle with an enthusiastic crowd. Cash bars and food are at hand from 9 p.m.-midnight.

When you’ve had your fill of White Linen, return to your cool room at the 1896 O’Malley House for a restful night in luxurious bed linens!
