We’re going to jump right over Mardi Gras and talk about another uniquely New Orleans festival, the opens in a new windowFrench Quarter Fest. Taking place over April 11-14 in 2019, this event promises the essence of New Orleans culture. The fest has been taking place since 1984, getting bigger and better every year. This 36th anniversary, the work of over 1500 volunteers will be evident in the more than 20 music stages, which employ over 1700 local musicians. All of the contracted work, such as stages, sound, security and sanitation (say that 7 times fast) is done by local companes, keeping the revenue within New Orleans.
The music is of all kinds of genres, including traditional and contemporary jazz, R&B, New Orleans Funk, Latin, Zydeco, folk, brass bands, gospel, classical, cabaret, and more. All of the stages will hold more than one hundred different musical acts. No matter which day you come, you will be treated to true NOLA music.
There will be eight different food vendor locations, with a plethora of choices, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and New Orleans FIT-approved. So many different types of cuisine are available, from po’ boys of all kinds, steak and crepes to elegant desserts, snoballs and everything in between. All food locations will also have beverage stations, with beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks available. Pick up a reusable beer cup, to help the environment and have a fun souvenir! Beverage station tips help the festival musicians.
Special events are a big part of the festival – these include dance lessons, the children’s STEM zone, seminars, the St Louis Cathedral Spring Concert, a 1930s, 40s 50s and fallback dance, and a second line kickoff parade. New in 2019, the Fest has partnered with KultureCity to have a sensory inclusive program for attendees with autism, PTSD and other conditions. Get more information at a station near the Audubon Aquarium.
