New Orleans in August may not be the first thing that occurs to you when you consider a vacation. It’s hot out there! And, it’s probably raining. Do not let this deter you – the A/C is working at 1896 O’Malley House and we are ready to host you for a steamy summer getaway with your significant other or a rowdy weekend with your buddies – here are five uniquely NOLA things to do in in August:
- First up – the whole month is dedicated to COOLinary New Orleans – 80 of the top restaurants offer special deals on special meals, as well as those little Louisiana special treats known as opens in a new windowlagniappe. This is a foodie’s paradise!
- August 5th is opens in a new windowWhitney White Linen Night – wear your cooler clothes for an evening of live music, open galleries, shopping, and eating. Start with the lively block party, and end at the After-Party, held at the Contemporary Arts Center.
- A rollicking, distinctly Big Easy event occurs on August 12 – the famous opens in a new windowRed Dress Run. Benefiting over 100 local charities, the runners and their fans start gathering at 9am in Crescent Park to enjoy music, beer and food before the run starts at 12:30. The contestants are decked out in red dresses, sometimes hats, probably shoes – and yes, that absolutely applies to the fellas, too! This adults only event – no one under 21 will be admitted.
- Advertised as “The best of Louisiana’s Brews, Bands and Bites all under one roof!” – the House of Blues presents opens in a new windowBrewsiana Craft Beer and Music Festival on August 19. Buy your tickets in advance to get in (21+ only) for the music of 6 artsts, then purchase wristbands to sample the beer. This year, an unlimited tastings and admission band is available for $45.
- For four nights near the end of the month, the streets will be filled with music, food, films, art, shopping, bowling…and who knows what all! The opens in a new windowNOLA Downtown Music and Arts Festival is free to the public and takes place August 23-26 in the Downtown Warehouse district. This is where up-and-coming artists perform, hoping to get their big break- you can see you saw them back when!
