The historical and actively haunted mansion, The Haunted Mortuary is a Victorian mansion, built in 1872 as a family home, is at the end of the Canal Street Cemeteries street car line. The architecture featured neo-classical revival style exterior, while the inside of the house resembles the eclectic Victorian style. Around 1930, this became the building where many bid their final farewells to loved ones, as the P J McMahon and Sons Undertaking Company. The interior was further modified to accommodate the activities of a funeral home including an embalming room and onsite cold storage.
The mansion was sold in 1996 and changed hands a few times, was gutted and eventually abandoned. But the mansion continued to have life to it, as the structure survived Hurricane Katrina. Jeff Bourne purchased the home and renovated it to become The Haunted Mortuary that it is today. It is the site of paranormal investigations and visitors have hailed it the scariest place in New Orleans. Ghost Tours and Ghost Hunting is available at The Mortuary, and this year, the dead walk the earth at this year’s The Mortuary Haunted House: Zombie Outbreak.
Whether you happen to be in New Orleans during the Halloween season, or if you’re journeying here to scare your socks off – we recommend a visit to The Haunted Mortuary. Then return to the safety and cheerful ambiance of 1896 O’Malley House Bed and Breakfast – to rest and relax in comfort, knowing that spirits can’t reach you here…or can they?
